 When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. That's what the people of Dover did when the mills and factories that built the town's economy became replaced by operations in larger cities and fell into long-abandoned disrepair. Instead of allowing the condition of the charming coastal village to worsen, locals gave it new life. The rustic old mills and factory spaces were recently given face lifts and the insides were outfitted with quaint new shops and eateries, allowing Dover to keep its warm, traditional appeal and enjoy progress at the same time.
It's well known that Dover is popular with watercraft enthusiasts. Portsmouth, known as New Hampshire's other seaport, is located in Rockingham County between the Bellamy and Cochecho Rivers is also close by in the center of the Seacoast region. Boaters enjoy all the water access, marinas and waterfront homes with private docks. But there is considerably more to see and do in Dover than just that. One of the things the town is best known for is the Woodman Institute, a museum just under 100 years old exhibiting local and natural history, art and antiques. The oldest house in Dover along with the former residence of abolitionist Senator John P. Hale are both located on the museum grounds as well. The Woodman Institute offers a day's worth of family fun and is not to be missed by visitors. Downtown Dover is a pleasant place to spend an afternoon. Boutiques, antique stores, art galleries, coffee shops and eateries line the rustic city center. A scenic drive down the shore or a walk along the Forsythia-lined path by the river offers sweet respite from stress. Four distinct seasons come with annual fairs, festivals and holiday events that keep the community close. For fun in the sun, snow or water, nothing beats Dover. |
